Hi All,

I was curious to hear comments regarding the pros/cons in gaining a FRM (Certified Financial Risk Manager) designation...
How Highly is it rated by employers???

Any comments would be appreciated.

Cheers.

When i interview someone, i look for grasp on fundamentals and how grounded in reality the individual is. Qualifications comes later.

Hi Devlish,

Thanks for your response, I understand where your coming from.

What I was trying to get at is... does the FRM have the same perceived relevancy to work in Treasury/Risk Managment as the CFA has for prospective equity analysts?

Cheers.

But taking those examinations will actually benefit you because it will become your foundation. You just have to make sure you learn something in the process and not just earn the designation and forget everything.

don't know about treasury,
but for risk management, some sort of advanced degree is more important than either frm or prm (from prmia.org, I have prm).
You can make a case that if you have a grad degree in eg quantum mechanics or civil engineering (so a field other than financial engineering) frm or prm will help you get a job in risk management,
but if you've got an MFE, frm or prm will add a lot less

Thanks for your help ppauper!

This raises a further question... which designation is better, the FRM or PRM designation????

Any and all comments would be appreciated.

Either one. FRM (given by GARP) is already established PRM (given by PRMIA) is new. But you'll find more democracy in PRMIA. More convenient to take tests as they are separated into 4 parts and you don't have to take them all at once. I also find their curriculum more quantitative than FRM. Finally, PRMIA charges no annual fees unlike GARP and CFA Institute.

Most risk management job postings look for FRM and PRM equally instead of prefering one designation.
