Dolphins Rally Past Pats to Tighten AFC East - The Sports Network Dec 6

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Dan Carpenter kicked a 41-yard field goal with 62 seconds remaining to give Miami the lead and Channing Crowder intercepted Tom Brady moments later, as the Dolphins tightened the AFC East race with a 22-21 victory over the New England Patriots at Land Shark Stadium.

Chad Henne threw for 335 yards with two touchdowns for the Dolphins (6-6), who rallied from a 14-0 first-half deficit and bounced back with a strong effort after last week's ugly loss in Buffalo.

Brady completed 19-of-29 passes for 352 yards with a pair of touchdowns and two interceptions for New England (7-5), which has lost two in a row and three of its last four. The Patriots were coming off a 38-17 loss at New Orleans on Monday night and now lead the division by just one game over Miami and the New York Jets.

The NFL should drop The Who from its Super Bowl halftime show, a South Florida child abuse prevention group has said
because Pete Townshend has purchased child pornography in the past
(the article is inaccurate: it claims Townshend was "cleared", but the reality is the police declined to press charges and placed him on a register of sex offenders, which is not at all the same as being "cleared".
And did anyone actually believe his excuse: it seems everytime a celeb gets caught doing something bad, be it buying kiddie porn or drugs or hookers, they claim it's because they're writing a book/researching a role/.....
The funniest version of the excuse I've heard to date seems to be Jane Fonda's kid arrested while buying heroin in NYC and claiming it was for a course at Brown University (drug addiction 101 no doubt))

We have talked about this before and I believe Pete in this case.

On the football front: Pats game yesterday great first half, Wes Welker injured though (knee blew out as he dodged a tackle). Critical player in wide receiver role. SuperBowl highly questionable for him - as it is MCL/ACL; he is probably out for the season.

Lost it in the end 34 - 27

from Bloomberg:

Jan. 4 (Bloomberg) -- New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker, whose 123 catches this season lead the National Football League, tore two ligaments in his left knee in yesterday’s loss in Houston, ESPN reported.

Welker was injured when his leg twisted after making a 12- yard reception on the Patriots’ first drive during their 34-27 defeat. He was taken off the field on a cart and initial tests revealed torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments, ESPN said, citing an unidentified person close to the situation.

The injury probably leaves the Patriots without their top receiver entering the playoffs. Although he missed two games, Welker set a franchise record for receptions and finished with 1,348 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

The Patriots won the American Football Conference’s East Division title with a 10-6 record this season and will host the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the playoffs on Jan. 10.

Welker is done. It is about a 12 month recovery from an MCL/ACL tear (I have personal experience), he probably won't be able to play next year either.

Well, Brady is pretty banged up too, but I am going to keep the faith!

***
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has played the last several games with three broken ribs, CBS Sports reported Sunday. The Patriots had added the rib problem to the injury report for Brady the week after he took a big hit against the Dolphins in Week 13 and briefly left the field to go to the locker room. He didn't miss any plays in the game.

A source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Brady also has a broken right ring finger that was giving him more problems than his three cracked ribs on Sunday.

Brady started Sunday in the regular-season finale at Houston, leaving for backup Brian Hoyer in the second quarter before coming back to start the second half. Brady, who this week was selected to his fifth Pro Bowl, returned this season after tearing two knee ligaments in last season's opener.

He has passed for 4,398 yards with 28 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while starting all 16 games.

Gains by recovering Taylor - Boston Globe Jan 4

Fred Taylor continued his late-season resurgence with a solid performance in the Patriots’ 34-27 loss to the Texans yesterday.

Taylor missed 10 straight games recovering from surgery to repair ligament damage in his ankle suffered against Baltimore in Week 4. He returned to action last week against Jacksonville but didn’t play until the fourth quarter, when he had 11 carries for 35 yards. Yesterday he was in for the entire game.

“I felt pretty good, but I’ve still got a lot of work to do,’’ Taylor said.

Yesterday, Taylor carried seven times for 33 yards - both team highs - as Laurence Maroney and Kevin Faulk were inactive. However, there wasn’t much workload for the running backs. Sammy Morris, who missed four consecutive games with a knee injury earlier this season, and BenJarvus Green-Ellis contributed as well as New England rushed for 74 yards on 19 carries.

Taylor also scored a pair of touchdowns, the ninth game in his career with two or more scores."

The Patriots have always scared me mostly because they are the Patriots, but they have some problems. Welker, I think, will be a big issue. Moss will catch 4 passes for 100 yds, but he hasn't gone over the middle for about 5 years now. If teams don't have to worry so much about Welker...and they have some issues on defense. All in all, they probably still have a pretty good chance. The two wild card teams don't scare anyone. The Jets are in only because their last two opponents played dead. The Ravens are a .500 team. The Chargers are hot but play in an awful division. The Colts are very good, but they won't have played for real in a month by the time of their first game. I think it is almost always a mistake to not go for the jugular when you have the chance. I am not sure how the pairings will play out, but it could be between the Patriots and the Colts.

The NFC is much more interesting; any one of the 6 teams could win it.

My two cents.

That's a pretty good read. I wish that I could go down and train with the Pats this week; I'd be a great alternate WR. Good turn of foot and great hands if I wear my little sticky gloves.

And it would really shake the Ravens up to see me out there.

Careful, not sure I'd want to be on the field with Ray Lewis near Super Bowl time.

I have about the right size to be a slot receiver, but at this point I'd be more of a stationary target.

It would be awesome to have a league of all-quant International football teams. In the contests, we would play American football, European football (Soccer to us), or Rugby. The form of play for each game would be determined at random. Games once a month, with championship around the holidays!

I will enlist Cuchulainn to train me for the Scrum.

Last time I checked, there were no women playing football in the NFL.

Game is 5 minutes old and the Pats are down by two touchdowns.

Oops, got sidetracked for a second, it is about to be three touchdowns. Doesn't look to be the Patriots day.
